History and General Description:
First bred in England, Ireland and Scotland, the Pitball is a cross between the Bulldog and the Terrier. This solid, strong and powerful dog exhibits at first sight a fearsome preditor.
Because of its ancestral history and breeding, its indisputable history of pit-fighting this dog today is still one of the most misunderstood. Originally used as a herder of livestock and for use as a catch dog in the hunt , however some Pitbulls were selected primarily for use as a fighting dog.
With a strong broad head between the cheeks, the thick neck, strong shoulders and a solid muscled back the Pit Bull is surprisingly agile for its size. Its coat is short, thick and shiny.
Suitability and Temperament:
The owner of a Pit Bull must be a stong minded individual to ensure they are the pack leader over the Pitbull. They must demonstrate constent leadership and train the Pitbull to socialize at an early stage. The ancestral genes inherited in the dog are nullified with this.
Always wanting to please its master, they are obedient, affectionate and a good natured family pet. They an outstanding guard dog. The dogs aggressive tendancies are directed towards other dogs NOT Humans because of its protective nature, in actual fact they love people.
A properly trained Pit Bull at an early stage will become a caring and loyal companion.
Health:
They are generally a very healthly breed , they are fearless with a very high pain tolerance which can also be a detriment to the dog eg, lacerations and broken bones. Can be prone to hip dysplasia.
Pit Bulls generally live to about 12 years.
