History and General Description:
The Labrador Retriever would have to be the worlds most popular dog. Originally from Newfoundland, a fisherman's dog that was used to pull in nets or assist the fisherman in retrieving them. Hence the name ' retriever '.
Then later the dog was taken to Britain and used as gundogs. There ability to retrieve anything on land or water and their ' soft mouths ' made them the preferred dog of choice.
An energetic and sporting dog. They have a short hard coat which is water resistent and is easily cared for.
Suitability and Temperament:
A very popular breed- loyal, obedient, loving, affectionate and patient making them the perfect family dog. They are a lively dog with an excellent temperament, they need to be excercised and they are naturally sociable. Great with children ( bond very closely ) and other dogs. The Labrador is also very versatile - a great working dog , they good on the hunt and work well on the land. Labradors need leadership and like to be made part of the family.
Health:
Owners must select their dog carefully due to overbreeding. Can be prone to elbow and hip dysplasia and eye disorders. A well bread health Labrador can live 11 to 15 years.
