History and General Description:

 

Originally from Scotland, from the highland Estate of Baron Tweedmouth, the first Golden Retriever was a cross between a yellow covered Retriever and a Tweed water spaniel. 

 

Golden Retrievers were bred as ' Gundogs ' to retirieve shot water fowl during game hunting.  Their soft mouth's were ideally suitable in retrieving shot birds and ducks.

 

 Suitability and Temperament:

 

A gentle and very loving breed. A popular family dog - great with children. They are friendly towards everyone. They make a good guard dog as well.

 

Retrievers need leadership and lots of excercise to avoid any behavioral issues. Owners would need to be outgoing Retrievers love the outdoors and love the water.

 

Health:

 

Due to the popularity of the Retriever and breeding they are prone to hip dysplasia, cancerand Von Willebrand's disease. Heart problems and congenital eye defects.

 

Golden Retrievers have a life expectancy of around 10 - 12 years.
