History and General Description:
Known as an 'Alsatian '. The German Shepard originated from Germany in the late 18th Century, the Shepard was used in hearding and protecting sheep.
Even today this dog makes people wary, however a well trained Shepard is one of the most loyal and protective dogs an owner can have .
Suitability and Temperament:
German Shepards are often used as working dogs and are a popular choice for a companion and for use as a protection dog ( hence Security and Police Forces ). They are intelligent, obedient alert and are quick to learn.
They are also very friendly, they are loyal and very adaptable to the family situation and are excellent with children. They only bark when necessary and need daily mental and physical exercise for stability.
Health:
Problems have arisen due to overbreeding around the world due to its popularity, ranging from temperament issues resulting in behavioral problems to hereditary diseases affecting the hip, blood disorders and digestive problems.
A well bred German Shepard has a life expectancy of around 13 years.
