History and General Description:
The Corgi originated from Wales and is one of two breeds the Welsh - having a tail and the Pembroke which is born tail-less.
The Corgi history originates its use as a herding dog. The 'Corgis' were used as Cattle herder's for many centuries by snapping at their heels.
Made more famous as the preferred dog of British Royalty in particular Queen Elizabeth ll .
Suitability and Temperament :
The Corgi is a highly intelligent and trainable dog who enjoys learning and they want to learn. The Corgi's love to challenge and are very agile and obedient. They make a great companion and can be wary of strangers.
They love to swim, love to walk. Good in apartments but must be excercised.
Generally not great with young children because of their inherent ability to snap or nip at the heels.
Health:
Eye problems are common with the breed making screening a necessity. Bone and joint problems can occur especially at the shoulder and the wrist. Avoid over feeding and limit jumping and stair climbing in young dogs.
Owners must guard against obesity and laziness particularly in older dogs. They must be excercised daily.
Corgi's are a healthly dog living around 12 to 14 years.
